Priya is a creative community of people who come together to practice
wellness. Priya Yoga empowers you to find your truth, within your being by exploring all aspects of yourself, the physical, mental and spiritual. Once you are connected to this truth you can freely bring it into action.
Priya Yoga was created by Michelle Andrie after studying various
methods of yoga for many years. Michelle takes the wisdom of
methodized yoga and teaches you to use the structure to find freedom.
The following is from an essay written by a Priya Yoga student:
Priya Yoga works on "opening up" various parts of the body to
sensation and release. It is the release that got me hooked. Her
mantra is "Let it go." I know that when I am in class I am as close
to being totally focused on the present as is possible for me.
We start each class by using tennis balls or larger rubber balls to
massage our own muscles with the ball between our body and the mat.
We will work on only one muscle or one muscle group per week. Some of
the poses are strenuous, but the teacher is always warning us not to
go past our edge, that we must make this our own private journey and
not compare ourselves with others in the class. She will come to look
at each of us to be assured that nobody is doing anything that might
be dangerous or injurious. Her theory is similar to Parker Palmer's
theory, but extended to the body. We come into the world able to suck
our toes and breathe with our tummies (among other things) but life
causes us to tighten up certain sets of muscles as a result of fear.
If we don't open our hearts and release these fear muscles, we can end
up all stooped over and bent in on ourselves, injuring our bodies as
well as our spirits. She is always trying to get us to open our heart
space and stand vulnerable to the world, that love is not what we have
been taught that it was, that our job is to keep our root (our legs
and feet) firmly planted in the earth and open our hearts to love.
"We are pure essence of love," she often says. "We come into this
earthly existence to know this thoroughly." We end each session in
relaxed rest with her reading a poem to us, then we have several
minutes of silent repose. The class closes with a chant of 3 "Ohms."
Come join us and find what Priya Yoga means to you!
